He was proud.

Six weeks later he called me in a panic.

One app couldn’t talk to his CRM. Another had silently stopped syncing to his accounting system. The third worked fine until he asked it to do something the original prompt hadn’t anticipated, and then it broke in a way nobody could untangle.

He didn’t have software.

He had application slop.

THE PROMISE AND WHAT ACTUALLY SHOWS UP

The pitch for AI vibe-coding sounds irresistible.

Describe what you want. Get an app. Skip the developers, skip the timeline, skip the invoice.

For a certain kind of problem, that pitch is real. Prototypes. Throwaway tools. A dashboard you’ll use twice and forget.

But something else is happening in businesses right now, and it’s happening fast.

They’re not maintainable. When something breaks, and it will, you fall into what I call the fix spiral. You try to patch the bug. The patch creates two new bugs. Those bugs create four more. Because the code was generated by a model that doesn’t remember why it made the choices it made, nobody can reason about the fix.

There’s no real version control. Some of the popular AI coding tools, Lovable and Bolt among them, don’t have proper version control or branching. That’s not a minor feature to leave out. That’s the difference between a toy and a platform. Without branching, you can’t safely try a change. Without version history, you can’t roll back a bad one. You’re one bad prompt away from losing work.

The tool itself might not exist next year. With the AI coding market moving this fast, you have no idea which of these platforms is still around in three months, much less three years. And when the platform dies, so does everything you built on it. Because you don’t own the code in any meaningful sense. You own a prompt history.

There’s no shared infrastructure. Every app you generate is a fresh start. New database schema. New auth. New way of representing a customer. So the more apps you build, the worse your data situation gets. Growth makes the problem worse, not better.

Put those five together and you don’t have a software strategy.

You have a growing liability that looks like productivity.
